The Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (Inalco) offers a vast range of distance learning courses covering a wide range of languages and their geographical areas, as well as thematic and disciplinary courses.
Inalco has a wealth of expertise in the development of distance learning. The establishment offers a wide choice of courses of all types (language diplomas, civilization diplomas, courses...).
Thus anyone, subject to obtaining the baccalauréat (or equivalent), can choose to start a language and/or civilization diploma or a (non-diploma) course in the specialties under-mentioned.

As far as enrolments are concerned, these are regular - depending on the teaching methods - for courses labelled "diploma", but can be done as a Passport, a minor, or as an opening course added to an Inalco diploma course for those labelled "passport" and "courses".

What are the admission requirements for distance learning courses?

Are there any prerequisites in terms of knowledge or skills?
If you wish to enroll in beginner courses (e.g. Diplôme d'initiation à la langue arabe, Diplôme de langue niveau 1, Diplôme de langue et de civilisation niveau 1), no prior knowledge of the chosen language is required.
If you already have a certain level and wish to enroll in DL2/DLC2 or DL3/DLC3, you can contact the course leader directly to take a placement test. -

It depends on each course, whether comodal or bimodal. In fact, some courses offer monthly face-to-face sessions.

- On average, how long does it take to complete a distance-learning course?
In the case of institutional degrees, the average duration is one year for each degree (e.g. DL1 in Burmese lasts 1 year and so on for DL2, DL3). In the case of the International Master of Armenian Studies, the duration is 2 years (Master 1 and Master 2).
- Are the courses organized in modules, and what is the pace of work?

- Am I enrolled in a program that awards a diploma, certification, or certificate of competence?
It depends on each course. For degree courses, Inalco offers:
- National diploma: International Master of Armenian Studies (IMAS)
- Institutional diploma (including Diploma of Language, Diploma of Language and Civilization and Diploma of Civilization): Arabic, Burmese, Estonian, Modern Hebrew, Lithuanian, Malagasy, Slovak, Rromani, Tibetan, Islamology.
Inalco also offers non-degree courses: Inuktitut distance learning for French speakers, a Vietnamese course (Investing and working in Vietnam).
- Is the certification obtained recognized by companies and institutions?
Our national diplomas are state-controlled, accredited and referenced on the répertoire national des certifications professionnelles - RNCP. The diplomas awarded by Inalco are also recognized by numerous organizations and companies that place their trust in us, and in some cases are even partners of our establishment.
- Is it possible to validate my prior learning or receive credit for courses already taken?

- How can I obtain an official copy of my diploma or certification once the program has ended?
The diplomas obtained are made available by the schooling department, and students are informed of collection dates by email. Further details: Diploma collection.

The Bibliothèque universitaire des Langues et civilisation (BULAC) has paper, online and heritage collections. You can access information on these different resources here: A whole world of resources
- Are there forums or discussion groups to exchange ideas with other students?
Exchange forums are provided on Moodle. Created by teachers to facilitate classroom exchanges and discussions, they can be accessed as required once pedagogical registration has been finalized.

Post-training prospects
- What are the career prospects after completing this course?
Inalco's courses offer countless career opportunities, mainly in teaching, translation, interpreting, multilingual engineering, international relations, tourism or cultural mediation. The press, publishing and communications sectors also employ language graduates.
Having a command of one or more languages is also an asset when it comes to working in the humanitarian sector. To benefit from a wider range of job opportunities, it is advisable to complement your language training with a specialization, for example in law, communication or business.

- Do distance learning students have the same opportunities for internships or work placements as face-to-face students?
Degree courses with a total hourly volume of at least 200 course hours over the year are eligible for an internship agreement. More details: Internship agreements
