‘Doctoral school’ n°265 'Languages, literatures, societies' brings together 14 research units, including 8 Unités Mixtes de Recherche (UMR), the latter across different academic institutions. For example, the French research institute on East Asia, Ifrae (UMR8043) is an Inalco, Université Paris-Cité and CNRS research unit. The Doctoral school supervises some 300 doctoral students from those various units. They are supervised by more than 100 supervisors (lecturers/associate professors 'habilitated to supervise doctoral research' or professors - tenured academics).
The Doctoral school's mission is to verify that doctoral dissertations are produced, and vivas organised, according to laws and regulations.

Mission of the doctoral school
- ensure that the student submits an innovative and feasible research topic, under the direction of a teacher qualified to direct research and competent in the chosen subject, when registering for a thesis;
- allocate the doctoral contracts available to it to candidates each year;
- ensure that doctoral students' research projects are in line with the host unit's research priorities, as part of a multidisciplinary approach that is well-informed about the state of the scientific field under study;
- supervise their work (annual registration and re-registration procedures, periodic review of progress and quality of work, organization of the mid-term of theses, setting up of defense juries) ;
- foster scientific exchanges between doctoral students and between doctoral students and teacher-researchers, in particular through doctoral days, notably within the framework of Université Sorbonne Paris Cité,
- encourage the establishment of co-directions and cotutelles and encourage doctoral students to multiply opportunities for external and, more broadly, European and international contacts ;
- provide doctoral students with the training they need to develop their research and professional projects;
- help doctoral students finance the field missions their research requires, and take part in scientific meetings to present the progress and results of their work;
- accompany doctoral students in preparing their subsequent career path.

The doctoral school n°265 Languages, literatures and societies of the world is headed by a director assisted by an office and a board bringing together research unit directors, two staff representatives, doctoral student representatives, and external personalities (scientists and representatives of the socio-economic world). Major decisions are taken by the board, while day-to-day management and preparatory work for board decisions is carried out by the bureau.

The doctoral school board is responsible for developing and implementing the scientific and pedagogical orientations of the doctoral school. In particular, it deliberates on applications for admission to doctoral studies, and on the allocation of doctoral contracts and other funding.
The board comprises twenty-six members, fourteen of whom are representatives of the institutions, research units or teams concerned. It also includes two representatives of the engineering, administrative, technical and service staff.
The other half is made up of doctoral students belonging to the doctoral school, elected by their peers; it is completed by members from outside the doctoral school, chosen in equal parts from among competent French and foreign personalities, in the scientific fields on the one hand, and in the relevant industrial and socio-economic sectors on the other.
In accordance with current regulations, the doctoral school board comprises 29 members divided into five colleges. It is chaired by the doctoral school's director, Alexandre Prstojevic.
