Armenian

Written from the 5th century CE onwards, and constituting its own branch of the Indo-European languages, ancient Armenian (grabar) provides access to a rich literature of historical, philosophical, theological, legal, scientific, poetic, mystical and epic texts.

Discover the language

The Armenian language is spoken today by around 3 million speakers in Armenia and 1.5 to 2 million in the countries of the former USSR. The Western Armenian diaspora is estimated at 2-3 million.

As Armenia was divided in the nineteenth century between the Ottoman Empire and Russia, two modern literary languages were formed: Western Armenian, spoken today by Armenian communities in the diaspora, and Eastern Armenian, the official language of the Republic of Armenia, also spoken among the large Armenian communities in Iran and Russia.

These three states of the language are taught at Inalco from the undergraduate level. Furthermore, civilization courses include, in addition to historical and geographical knowledge, an overview of Art History and literary movements.
