Inuktitut language and civilization distance learning certificates 1 and 2
The training in Inuit language and culture offered at Inalco is based on the study of Inuktitut, which is spoken by the Inuit of the Canadian Eastern Arctic. Inuktitut has official status in Nunavik and Nunavut. The Nunavik dialect is studied at Inalco. With its oral tradition, but transcribed for over a century using a syllabary, Inuktitut is a particularly complex language for non-native speakers. Marc-Antoine Mahieu is in charge of teaching the language, which involves language sciences. It includes learning the fundamental elements of the system, practicing basic interactions, analyzing a variety of documents, translating from Inuktitut, and opening up to the diversity of dialects. Cultural courses are taught by Guy Bordin. As the Inuit are among the most studied peoples by ethnologists, a significant part of training in this field involves reading.
