The contemporary Yemeni novel and history

As part of the "Paroles de créateurs" cycle, the CERLOM team hosts a meeting with Yemeni novelists Habib Abdulrab Sarori and Ali Al-Muqri.

Habib Abdulrab Sarori

Born in Aden (Yemen) in 1956, Habib Abdulrab Sarori is a researcher and novelist. A university professor specializing in artificial intelligence since 1992, he has taught at INSA Rouen, Université de Normandie. Author of a first novel in French, followed by ten others in Arabic, some of his works have been translated into different languages and some have received prestigious literary awards. In 2017, Sindbad/Actes Sud published his novel La Fille de Souslov, in a French translation by Hana Jaber. He has also published numerous scientific works and essays on literature, in French and Arabic. Since 2023, he has been Professor Emeritus and President of the Association des Amis d'al-Ma'arri.

 

Ali Al-Muqri

Born in Taiz (Yemen) on August 30, 1966 and currently residing in France, Ali Al- Muqri is a journalist, poet and novelist. Several times a finalist for major Arab novel prizes, his novels Le Beau Juif, Femme interdite and Le Pays du Commandeur were translated by Ola Mehanna and Khaled Osman and published by Liana Levi. He has also written several collections of poems, as well as two novels: Un goût noir, une odeur noire and Encens d'Aden, published by Dar Al-Saqi, Beirut, in 2008 and 2014 respectively. His works have also been translated into English, Italian, Kurdish and Persian.
