Presentation
On 23 July 1952, the Free Officers took power in Egypt. Between August 1953 and January 1954, Gamal Abdel Nasser wrote three press articles entitled The Philosophy of the Revolution. In them, he affirms that the military group’s movement was not a coup d’état, but a revolution. The first part of this work offers a critical edition in Arabic of these three articles as well as an original translation in French with commentaries. The second part of the work approaches The Philosophy of the Revolution from two angles. Firstly, the origins and destiny of this now-famous text are examined in their historical context. Secondly, the text is analysed so as to foster thought on the place of social justice and culture within national liberation struggles. The whole aims to contribute to the erasure, still ongoing, of the colonial legacy in both post-colonial and post-imperial nation-states.
Author
Didier Inowlocki is a research engineer at EGYLandscape and a doctoral candidate at Inalco, where he has taught the history of the Ottoman Empire. His research currently focuses on the practice of sport hunting in contemporary Egypt. Through the subject of hunting, rural resistance repressed by the nationalists is brought to light. Animals furthermore occupy a central role in the colonial relationship.
