About the Kinotayo festival

Created in 2006, Kinotayo is the first festival of contemporary Japanese films presented to date in France. It is organized by the Kinotayo association and receives the support and sponsorship of numerous public and private organizations, both French and Japanese.

The image has always been the subject of exchanges between France and Japan. As far back as the 19th century, Japonisme reflected the French Impressionists' fascination with Japanese aesthetics. The aim of Kinotayo is to perpetuate this tradition of dialogue, while breaking away from the clichés associated with the representation of Japanese culture in France.

On the one hand, the festival's objective is to bring to the attention of French audiences the Japanese point of view on social issues common to both our countries. To this end, each year the festival selects films that have been produced for less than 18 months and have never before been shown in France, so that they can be screened as part of the festival and French audiences can discover the richness of the Japanese 7th art. For the duration of a screening, the idea is to see the world through Japanese eyes, imbued with great sensitivity and a unique sense of harmony.

On the other hand, the rules of commercial distribution offer only a fragmentary approach to Japanese cinematic creation. Kinotayo aims to move away from this approach and showcase previously unseen contemporary films. Finally, beyond the festival, the Kinotayo association works all year round to facilitate the distribution of Japanese films in France: it handles the translation, subtitling and post-production of most of the films selected.
