Created in 1986 by Taiwanese director Stan Lai (賴聲川), Secret Love and the World of Peach Blossoms (暗戀桃花源) is an iconic piece of contemporary Taiwanese theater. It juxtaposes two totally distinct narratives: a romantic tragedy and an absurdist comedy, which find themselves forced to share the same stage due to a misunderstanding in the theater's programming.

The interference between these two stories, one dramatic and the other burlesque, creates a powerful contrasting effect and highlights the coexistence of the tragic and the comic in life. Through this mise en abyme of theater within theater, L'amour secret et le monde des pêchers en fleurs questions fate, collective memory and the quest for elusive happiness.

A simplified adaptation will be given by students in the Chinese Studies department.
