Inalco university offers a wide range of distance learning courses covering many languages and their geographical areas, as well as thematic and disciplinary courses.
Inalco has a wealth of expertise in the development of distance learning. The school offers a wide range of courses of all types (language diplomas, civilization diplomas, courses, etc.), delivered either co-modally (a mix of face-to-face and distance learning) or bimodally (100% distance learning).
Thus, everyone, subject to obtaining the baccalaureate (or equivalent), can choose to start a language and/or civilization diploma or even a (non-diploma) course in the specialties sub-mentioned.

Introduction
The introductory year ensures real competence in Arabic. It leads to a diploma, and enables students who have never studied Arabic before to bring themselves up to the level required for entry into a bachelor's degree at Inalco in just one year, or to continue in DL2 Literal Arabic by distance learning. This introductory diploma leads to CERCL level A2.
This is a demanding course, requiring significant personal investment. The workload amounts to around twenty hours a week, including 10h30 of classes in literal Arabic and civilization, and at least as much time for personal work.
Target audience
The introductory diploma is aimed at absolute beginners in the Arabic language. It is aimed at people seeking a solid grounding in literal Arabic, and enables them to acquire real skills in the contemporary history of the Arab world and the Middle East.
Program
Diplôme d'initiation à l'arabe à distance:
Semesters 1 and 2
- Grammar: 1h30 asynchronous classes on Moodle per week. Two to three question/answer sessions on Zoom are also offered each semester.
- Language practice (oral and written expression, oral and written comprehension, translation and press language): 6h including 4h asynchronous classes on Moodle and 2h synchronous classes on Zoom each week.
- Civilization (history of the contemporary Arab world and Middle East): 3h asynchronous classes, exercises and supplements to work on each week on Moodle. A question-and-answer session on Zoom is also offered once a month.
Teaching methods
The bimodal teaching of the Introduction to Arabic diploma is delivered through asynchronous courses on Moodle and synchronous courses on Zoom. Arabic training is offered in a hybrid mode 2/3 asynchronous (courses and activities to be done on Moodle) and 1/3 synchronous (virtual classroom courses on Zoom). Attendance at this synchronous class session is compulsory to be able to validate the diploma.
Assessment methods
The assessment of knowledge is carried out online in full continuous assessment. No exceptions can be made for final tests. In languages, oral and written practice is validated by a weekly assessment, and grammar by two assessments each semester. In history, continuous assessment is based on three assessed exercises per semester.
By enrolling for the distance learning diploma, students undertake to attend the synchronous sessions on Zoom and to complete the continuous assessment assessments offered throughout the year. Language assessments on Moodle take place on dates and at times communicated to students at the beginning of the semester. Under no circumstances can they be rescheduled to suit individual availability, or made up in the event of absence. Any assessment not completed is marked zero

Introduction
The Diplôme de langue (DL) d'arabe littéral is a fully distance learning course spread over three years, each of which leads to a diploma. It is particularly well-suited to meet the needs of people following other courses or engaged in professional life.
The DL1 corresponds to the first year of training, and is designed for absolute beginners in literal Arabic. It provides solid training and enables students to reach CEFR level A2 in two semesters. Validation of the DL1 enables students to obtain the equivalence of the UE of literal Arabic of the introductory diploma by VAC.
The DL2, which corresponds to the second year of training, provides solid training and enables students to reach CEFR level B1-B2 in two semesters. Validation of the DL2 enables students to obtain the equivalence of the Literal Arabic UEs of the Arabic L1 LLCER by VAC.
These are demanding courses, requiring significant personal investment. The workload amounts to around ten hours a week, including 7.5 hours of classes in literal Arabic, and at least as much time for personal work.
The DL3 provides a solid grounding in Arabic and enables students to achieve CEFR level B2-C1. Validation of the DL3 enables students to obtain the equivalence of the Literal Arabic UEs in the second year of the Bachelor's degree in Literal Arabic. It is also a demanding course, requiring considerable personal commitment. The workload amounts to some fifteen hours a week, including 6h of classes in literal Arabic, and at least as much personal work time.
Target audience
The DL1 is aimed at absolute beginners in the Arabic language.
The DL2 is open by right to students who have passed the DL1 in Literal Arabic or the Diplôme d'initiation à distance. It is also open to anyone who can demonstrate the level required for entry into the diploma (CERCL level A2 - see the course leader).
The DL3, which corresponds to the third year of training, is open by right to those who have validated the DL2 in literal Arabic. It is also open to students who have completed the first year of the Bachelor's degree in Literal Arabic, as well as to anyone who can demonstrate the level required for entry into the diploma (see the training manager).

Presentation
This course was created to meet a demand for high-level Armenological diploma courses, accessible online and with no French prerequisites. It makes the skills and experience of a renowned teaching team accessible to a large number of students worldwide. It creates a unique framework for experienced speakers of Western Armenian (a diasporic language) to practice intellectual and professional activity in this language within a group of students from all over the world.

Teaching methods
The program is delivered in Armenian, mostly Western language. It is accessible entirely by distance learning (synchronous and asynchronous), or in hybrid distance+face-to-face mode depending on the course. Assessment methods
Assessment is mainly by continuous assessment, in the case of final examinations a session is planned in January (semester 1) and a session at the end of May-beginning of June (semester 2), as well as a make-up session (second chance) at the end of June.

Introduction
Inalco is the only university in France, and one of the few in the world, to offer instruction in Burmese.
Training in Burmese is aimed at both those seeking initial core training and those wishing to complete another course of study taken previously or in parallel. The first-year course is designed for absolute beginners, so no prior knowledge of the language is required. Those who already have some knowledge of the language can contact the course leader for possible adjustments.
Only the Burmese language courses are accessible by distance learning, enabling students to obtain a language diploma (DL, one of the types of institutional diplomas offered by Inalco), over three years. The SHS subjects enabling validation of a full Licence are currently only accessible face-to-face (or terminal assessment).
Target audience
This course is aimed at students seeking language skills that can be used directly for oral and written communication in Burmese, and for processing and translating all types of documents and texts written in this language (target proficiency level: A2 at the end of the 1st year, B1 at the end of the 2nd year and B2 at the end of the 3rd year).

Introduction
The Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (INALCO, Paris) is one of the few institutions in Europe to offer a distance learning course in Estonian. This formula covers all language courses in the "Diplomas in Language and Civilization" from first to fourth year (DLC1, DLC2, DLC3 and DLC4), i.e. grammar, text study and language practice (as well as the Estonian media course in 3rd year).
Courses take place over 26 weeks, from mid-September to mid-May. They represent around 6 to 7 hours of personal work per week, and enable students to achieve proficiency level A2 at the end of the first year, B1 at the end of the 2nd year, B2 at the end of the 3rd year and C1 at the end of the 4th year.
Target audience
This course is designed for people wishing to learn Estonian in depth and acquire a solid knowledge of Estonia and its culture, without committing to the preparation of a national diploma. To acquire a good command of Estonian, corresponding to proficiency level C1, it is necessary to follow all four years of the curriculum.
The first year courses are designed for absolute beginners. No previous knowledge of the language is required. People who already have some knowledge of Estonian can apply for direct admission to DLC 2, 3 or 4, depending on their level (see the course leader).

Teaching methods
Work is mainly done online, on the Moodle platform. This provides weekly access to a new lesson accompanied by audio recordings, self-correcting practice tests and short homework assignments. The homework is personalized and corrected by the teachers. Participants can ask teachers questions at any time and communicate with each other via the course forum or Moodle messaging system. Courses can also be followed via videoconferencing.
Assessment methods
For knowledge assessment, full online continuous assessment is practiced for students who attend courses via videoconferencing. On-site terminal assessment concerns students who work on courses on Moodle without participating in the videoconference.

Introduction
The Language Diploma (DL) in Modern Hebrew is a fully distance learning course spread over two years, each of which leads to a diploma. It is particularly suited to meet the demands of people following other courses or engaged in professional life.
The distance DL1 in Modern Hebrew enables students who have never studied the language before to reach A1+ level in two semesters, while the distance DL2 enables students to reach CEFR B1+ level.
Target audience
Are you a student engaged in other courses, sometimes at a very high level (thesis, grandes écoles, etc.), and looking for an introduction to Hebrew? This year of study allows you to do just that, and earn a school diploma at the end.
Do you want to specialize in Hebrew? This is your opportunity to acquire a solid foundation in the language so that, starting from an initial level, you can later, if you wish, specialize in the field of Jewish and Hebrew studies research.
For the DL1 distance learning course, no language prerequisites are necessary. For direct access to DL2, please contact the course leader.
Program
The year of each of the distance Modern Hebrew DLs is made up of two 13-week semesters. Teaching is 5h (DL1) or 7h30 (DL2) weekly Hebrew classes to which must be added 10 hours of personal work:
- Oral comprehension and expression, in asynchronous distanciel, 2 hours of individual work weekly (including 15 to 30 minutes of viewing)
- Written comprehension and expression, in asynchronous distanciel, 8 hours of individual work weekly (including 2 hours of asynchronous).

These courses allow a progression totally adapted to the distance learning mode. Training in Modern Hebrew is offered in a hybrid mode 50% asynchronous and 50% synchronous.

Introduction
The Inuit language and culture training offered at Inalco is based on the study of Inuktitut, which is spoken by the Inuit of the Canadian Eastern Arctic. Inuktitut has official status in Nunavik (Arctic Quebec) and Nunavut. It is the language of Nunavik that serves as the standard for learning at Inalco. With its oral tradition, but transcribed for over a century using a syllabary, Inuktitut has an extremely unfamiliar polysynthetic structure.
Taught over four years by Marc-Antoine Mahieu. The Inuktitut Passport 1 is a two-year course, while the Inuktitut Passports 2 and 3 are one-year courses. It includes: acquisition of the language's basic structures and elements, oral and written expression, analysis of a variety of texts, translation into and from Inuktitut, as well as a linguistic overview of the diversity of dialects, their functioning and evolution. Courses in Inuit culture are taught by Guy Bordin and other guest lecturers. These include history and anthropology.
Target audience
Registration for the "Inuktitut Distance Passport" enables students based in Canada to follow courses by videoconference, but does not lead to a diploma.
This course is therefore primarily aimed at people with a professional or research activity related to the Inuit of Nunavik (Arctic Quebec).

Presentation
At present, this institutional diploma in Islamology is the only one in France to offer initial training taught entirely by distance learning. Its aim is to train a wide audience in Islamic religion.
The course favors an interdisciplinary pedagogical approach, with a particular focus on:
- Fundamental Islamology, understood as the analysis of texts and doctrines (classical and modern)
- the historical study of Arab-Muslim societies
- the sociological and political analysis of the religious phenomenon
- the critical reading of the founding texts

Teaching methods
Teaching is entirely distance learning. Each module includes a lecture and ancillary activities (readings, quizzes, etc.). Lectures are asynchronous, recorded and available on moodle. Each module requires around 1.5 hours of work per week.
A weekly live session is led by each teacher in turn, with the time slot specified at the beginning of the year (for guidance, Friday 6pm). This weekly meeting enables us to maintain a link with the teaching team and with all those enrolled. The session is recorded and can be consulted remotely. However, we strongly advise you to follow these sessions live.
Assessment methods
The assessment of knowledge is carried out remotely through a terminal distance assessment for each module.

Introduction
Today spoken by some 3.5 million people worldwide, Lithuanian is the last of the Baltic languages, along with Latvian. Spoken by a peasant population nestled in dense forests and marshy lands, it has remarkably preserved various features of ancient Indo-European. Inalco is the only French institution to offer training in Lithuanian. Inalco offers the most comprehensive curriculum in Europe, combining in-depth study of the language with that of Lithuanian geography, history, culture and literature.
The language and civilization diplomas form a coherent four-year course. Each year of study leads to the award of a diploma: DLC 1, 2, 3 and 4 (only DLC1 is waived in comodal).
The aim of the course is to:
- equip students with a linguistic competence that can be used directly for oral and written communication in Lithuanian, and for the exploitation and translation of all types of documents and texts written in this language (target proficiency level: A2 at the end of 1st year, B1 at the end of 2nd year and B2 at the end of 3rd year)
- provide a general knowledge of Lithuanian history, culture and society, giving access to the country's cultural references and social and communicational codes, a prerequisite for maintaining professional or non-professional relations with Lithuanian speakers
Target audience
This course is aimed primarily at people not seeking a national diploma but wishing to learn Lithuanian in depth and acquire a solid knowledge of Lithuania and its culture.

Introduction
Malagasy is the language of Madagascar and a number of inhabitants of the island of Mayotte. There are many regional variants, and it is that of the Imerina (Tananarive region) that has been chosen as the official language, due to a long tradition of writing dating back to the first half of the 19th century. Malagasy belongs to the Austronesian language family.
At present, Inalco is the only university where Malagasy is taught as a foreign language, and language diplomas form a coherent three-year curriculum. Each year of study leads to the award of a diploma: DL1 (CERCL level achieved: A2), DL2 (CERCL level achieved: B2) and DL3 (CERCL level achieved: C1).

Introduction
Quechua currently has around eight million speakers in five South American countries: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. More than half of them live in Peru, where there is also the greatest dialect diversity. What is commonly referred to as "Quechua" in fact corresponds to a fairly diversified set of dialects, or even a family of languages. Historical linguistics hypothesizes that the first expansion of the language took place in the second half of the 1st millennium AD, from a focus in central Peru.
There are two main dialect groups, usually referred to as "Quechua I" and "Quechua II". The first brings together the dialects spoken in central and north-central Peru, while the second encompasses the Quechua dialects of Ecuador and Colombia to the north, and those of southern Peru, Bolivia and Argentina to the south. The variety taught at Inalco is that of southern Peru (Cuzco and Ayacucho dialects), which is very close to Bolivian Quechua.
This "History of the Andes" course is offered within the Quechua DLC1 and is open to students and auditors alike (Passport registration possible).
Program (QUEA110c)
Training in Quechua language and culture at Inalco takes place over four years. Grammar instruction includes the acquisition of structures and the analysis of a variety of texts. Complementary to this teaching, practical language courses are provided throughout the four years by a Bolivian tutor. These language lessons are complemented by courses in history (History of the Andes), geography (Organization of space in Peru), ethnology (Ethnology of the Andes), oral and written Quechua literature and dialectology. Only the History of the Andes course is accessible via distance learning. The other Quechua DLC courses take place face-to-face.

Introduction
Sinhala, Sri Lanka's official language since 1948 (status now shared with Tamil), is spoken by almost 74% of the island's population, or over 13,000,000 speakers.
There are two quite distinct variants of Sinhala: a form known as spoken Sinhala, and a form known as literary Sinhala. Literary Sinhala is very distinct from spoken Sinhala in terms of pronunciation, grammar and above all vocabulary, which is enriched by many borrowings from Sanskrit and Pali, the two mother languages. It is a language used in written communication, in oral speeches prepared in advance, in newspapers and TV programmes, in narrative novels and treatises.
Inalco is one of the few universities in the West to offer a complete Sinhala curriculum. The Sinhala bachelor's degree provides training in the language in both its spoken and literary versions, and opens up a vast field of research for students aiming for an academic career.
Exceptionally in 2023-2024, bachelor's degree courses (and institutional diplomas) are taught in a hybrid way, both face-to-face and distance learning.
Target audience
The first level of Sinhala is aimed at both those seeking a main initial training and those wishing to supplement another course taken previously or in parallel. The course is designed for beginners. Introduction
Swahili, with an estimated 90-105 million speakers, plays a leading role throughout East and Central Africa.
It features in the publications of major international institutions (UN bodies, NGOs...) and occupies a growing position in information and communication technologies.
Inalco is the only institution in France to offer Swahili courses to students from a wide range of backgrounds. Swahili is one of the languages on offer for the baccalauréat exam and the competitive examination for Conseiller and Secrétaire des Cadres d'orient at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Through a gentle progression, the program focuses on the acquisition of the fundamental structures of the language and on strategies for learning it independently. Depending on the individual's project and investment in learning Swahili, the following levels can be reached: end of L1 or CL 1 level A1, end of L2 or CL 2 level A2 /B1, end of L3 or CL 3: oral, level B1/ written, level B2, or even C1 depending on the individual
Target audience
The Swahili license (LLCER AOI: "Foreign and regional language, literature and civilization - Indian Ocean course) is aimed at both those seeking a main initial training and those wishing to complete another course taken previously or in parallel.
The first year of the course is designed for absolute beginners. No prior knowledge of the language is required. It is open to students holding a baccalauréat, an equivalent qualification, or benefiting from a validation of acquired experience (VAE).
In addition to students enrolling for initial training, it is aimed at:
⇒ students from other universities seeking an additional qualification;
⇒ students (Socrates-Erasmus) enrolled in European universities, wishing to obtain training in one of the languages offered in the mention;
⇒ students seeking to discover their native languages and cultures;

Access to the mention is possible in S3 or S5, after study of applications subject to validation of previous courses.

- SWAA110b Written Practice 1 : courses are designed in connection with the grammar program and fully available on Moodle. Using a variety of materials (texts, images, songs), the sessions offer exercises for reinvesting and developing the knowledge acquired in grammar. Indicative program: discovery of nominal classes; affirmative verb forms; beginning of negative verb forms; use of NI/SI copulas; greetings and introductions, simple statements.
- SWAB110a - Swahili Grammar 2 : this is an interactive online course. Locative classes, the subjunctive, negative conjugations, the conditional, possessives, animate noun agreements, augmentatives and diminutives. Work methods: flipped classroom, class attendance for face-to-face students. Allow 2 to 3 hours of individual work per week on Moodle, preferably spread over several days.
- AOIA130c - Societies and environment in Africa : documents are available on Moodle. This course presents the diversity of African communities in their relationship with the environment, in terms of practices and representations.

Teaching methods
The Swahili section offers distance teaching of Swahili by correspondence (which does not mean that there is videoconferencing teaching, but that documents are deposited online on the Moodle platform). The language courses of the first two years of the LLCER are available to all students who are unable to travel (employed, living abroad...), as well as some civilization courses. Each AU represents around 6 to 7 hours of personal work per week, depending on the level of commitment of each student, and is mainly completed online.

Introduction
Since the introduction of economic openness (Đổi mới) 35 years ago now, Vietnam has recorded average annual economic growth of some 7% gradually becoming one of the rising economic powers in Southeast Asia. In the space of three decades, under the tutelage of the Vietnamese Communist Party, the country has made the transition from a centrally planned economy to a "market economy with a socialist orientation". Understanding these fundamentals and the driving forces behind this economic transition will enable foreign players to better apprehend the corporate and business environment in this still singular country. Finally, Vietnam, considered by many Western investors as a "gateway" to other Southeast Asian countries, is set to play an increasingly important role in this fast-growing region. What are its strengths and weaknesses in this highly competitive environment?
The aim of this course is to:
- introduce students to a "practical" economic approach to Vietnam and understand the transition mechanisms that have been implemented,
- describe the process of setting up an industrial and commercial project in Vietnam
- provide keys to "operational success" in Vietnam
- enable learners to acquire the Vietnamese lexical field appropriate to the subjects covered in the course

There are no prerequisites on the economic environment part, business or project. Concerning the language level, the vocabulary studied is level C1 (not necessarily necessary to follow the course).

Course 1 - opening, general information and awareness (SPOC (75 / 25) - Face-to-face):
The aim of this first course is to assess the general environment in Vietnam and to put into a "dynamic" perspective the general information (geographical, historical, economic, political) that students may have acquired about Vietnam throughout their schooling, professional experience.
The expectation of the course is that students will not only be able to situate Vietnam in its geographical, political and cultural context, but also be able to talk about it dynamically to an organization (company, administration, NGO) with a dedicated Vietnamese lexical field.
Course 2 - Vietnam: understanding the business environment (SPOC (60 / 40) - Presential):
The aim of this course is to understand the business environment in Vietnam, explain the process of setting up a company in Vietnam and master the search for economic information in Vietnam to improve the economic performance of one's company. The aim is also to acquire a dedicated Vietnamese lexical field.
Course 3 - Vietnam: how to prepare your project and position yourself (10% SPOC; feedback - 90% face-to-face; case studies and advice):
The aim of this course is to acquire the technical and interpersonal keys to managing your organization (company, NGO, Administration) in Vietnam. It is also a question of seeing how to use knowledge of the language and culture to position oneself in the Vietnamese business environment while acquiring a dedicated Vietnamese lexical field.
Teaching methods
The pedagogical organization will mix a theoretical approach (macroeconomic, geographical, geopolitical, legal data, etc.) and a practical one (business creation cases, setting up a business intelligence system in the Vietnamese environment and acquiring the Vietnamese vocabulary linked to these activities). This course will also follow the hybrid approach enabling students to have access to tools and corpora that can be activated remotely and autonomously, while benefiting from guidance in setting up business creation and information management projects in Vietnam.
Assessment methods
The knowledge test consists of text analysis (for communication in Vietnamese economics) and translation/version (for mastery of economic vocabulary).

Registrations and exams
Registrations are regular - depending on the teaching modalities - for courses marked "diploma", but can be done as Passport, minor, or opening teaching added to an inalco diploma course for those marked "passport" and "courses".
Nota Bene:
- Some courses may be subject to limited intake capacities.
- Arabic initiaion diploma courses cannot be chosen as passport, minor or opening courses.

Examination arrangements
In rare cases, examinations can be taken face-to-face (contact teachers).
