Support the Inalco Foundation

Preserving languages, civilizations and the people who embody them

For over 200 years, Inalco has played an essential role in promoting and preserving the world's languages and cultures. With over 100 languages taught and 14 research laboratories, Inalco occupies a unique place in the higher education and research landscape, both in France and internationally.

Created in 2021, the Inalco Foundation supports the establishment's development to enhance its influence and preserve this priceless linguistic and cultural heritage.

By supporting the Foundation's actions, you contribute to innovative projects in the fields of teaching, research and society.

Together, we can continue to pass on the richness of the world's cultures to future generations.

EDUCATION - Supporting mobility for linguistic and cultural immersion

Immersion in a foreign country is a key component of language and civilization training at Inalco. It enables students to perfect their command of the language and understand the cultural nuances associated with it - crucial skills for many careers (international business, diplomacy, journalism, research).

However, this essential opportunity remains difficult to access for many students. Financial and institutional obstacles hinder their ability to leave, particularly for regions of the world outside the ERASMUS + program, for which scholarships are rarer.

This is why the Inalco Foundation has set up Scholarships for Excellence to remove these financial brakes. Since 2022, talented young people have benefited from this support to go on immersion trips to Tajikistan, India, Thailand or even Kyrgyzstan, thus consolidating their linguistic and cultural skills.

Given the success of this program, the Foundation wishes to increase the number of immersion scholarships to 15 by 2025 to finance student mobility, enabling more of them to experience a complete immersion, essential to their professional future.

RESEARCH - Enhancing and disseminating knowledge in a changing world

Research at Inalco is distinguished by its global and interdisciplinary approach to cultural areas. Mastery of local languages, combined with rigorous scientific analysis, produces valuable knowledge about societies, in their historical depth as well as their contemporary challenges.

In a context of global crises (environmental, political, health), it is imperative to support the human and social sciences. They provide a critical understanding of world developments, but often lack the resources to continue developing.

The Inalco Foundation acts as a catalyst to mobilize funding and support innovative research projects. Through the Chair "Arts and Heritage of Afghanistan", for example, it has contributed to the preservation and teaching of this threatened heritage. This initiative, unique in France, will welcome Afghan researchers and students, and promote the dissemination of knowledge about this region to the student public.

Thanks to donations, the Foundation is launching a program on the Himalayas, Tibet, Mongolia and Nepal zones to strengthen the preservation of rare or rarely taught knowledge and languages, while contributing to a better understanding of global issues. The focus will be on academic exchanges and scientific events to deepen knowledge of these territories, and events for the general public to share them with as many people as possible.

"Supporting research into Mongolian languages and cultures means enlightening the dynamics of a thousand-year-old civilization, and promoting intercultural and intergenerational dialogue with the aim of questioning the foundations of our understanding of the world. Thanks to donations, our students and teachers are able to travel to the field to conduct innovative research, while consolidating institutional relationships with our Mongolian partners. Each of the funded missions, with themes ranging from cultural and religious heritage to the perception of climate change, not only documents the priceless heritage of these traditions, but also helps young researchers produce and transmit knowledge needed to identify and respond to fundamental questions and challenges of our time."

SOCIETY - Preserving knowledge and people at risk

In conflict zones, teachers, researchers and students are often targeted, deprived of the opportunity to practice their profession and pass on their knowledge. The threat to these people also jeopardizes the knowledge they carry and its transmission to future generations.

Without appropriate support for researchers, teachers and students in danger, a whole section of global culture is at risk. It is becoming crucial to offer them a space where they can continue their work and enrich the global academic community. Inalco, through its vocation as a conservatory of languages and civilizations, is on its own scale a refuge for this endangered knowledge.

Thanks to the foundation's support, l'Inalco has already welcomed several researchers and students in exile, notably as part of the PAUSE program, a national program supported by the Collège de France. These initiatives have enabled researchers from Ukraine, Russia, Afghanistan and Syria to pursue their work in safety and share their knowledge with Inalco's academic community.

With your support, the Inalco Foundation wishes to strengthen its capacity to welcome students and teacher-researchers in danger, in a global context marked by the multiplication of crises.

"Arriving in France in March 2022, just as the fighting was intensifying in Ukraine, I was lucky enough to be accommodated at CREE at Inalco thanks to the national PAUSE program for researchers in exile. In a context of uncertainty, I found there a precious moment of respite and the opportunity to resume my work as a teacher-researcher, a vocation that is deeply close to my heart.

For two intense years, I was able to devote myself fully to teaching and research, culminating in the publication of a book on Franco-Ukrainian diplomatic and military relations. This support has played a key role not only in my career, but also I hope, on its own scale, in the development of Ukrainian political studies, a field essential to strengthening Franco-Ukrainian cooperation.

Thanks to the Inalco Foundation, for example, we were able to organize a large-scale conference, under the high patronage of the President of the Republic, bringing together researchers, political decision-makers and civil society players to exchange views on Franco-Ukrainian perspectives. This type of initiative contributes to enriching knowledge and promoting a necessary dialogue between our two countries, to which I am proud to be able to contribute.

CREE's welcome and the Foundation's support have been essential for me in this period of transition. In return, I hope to have contributed to initiating a dynamic around Ukrainian political studies, essential for building together a future marked by understanding and cooperation."

5 reasons to support us

1. Preserving linguistic and cultural diversity

The Inalco Foundation plays an essential role in protecting rare languages and cultures from around the world. With over 100 languages taught, Inalco is one of the few institutions to offer such linguistic diversity. Your support helps preserve this priceless global heritage, ensuring that endangered languages do not disappear and that the associated cultures continue to be passed on to future generations.

2. Facilitating access to international immersion

Language learning involves immersion, but not all students can afford to go abroad. By supporting the Foundation, you help fund excellence scholarships that give deserving students access to immersion stays, reinforcing their linguistic mastery and cultural understanding. This contributes directly to their academic success and professional prospects.

3. Strengthening the humanities and social sciences

In a context of complex global crises, the humanities and social sciences offer essential keys to understanding political, social and cultural dynamics. The Inalco Foundation supports research projects that address major contemporary issues such as conflict, migration and climate change, drawing on the long-term history of the cultural areas concerned and precise linguistic knowledge. Your support encourages the production and dissemination of critical knowledge.

4. Supporting teachers and researchers at risk

Conflicts and crises force many researchers to leave their countries, jeopardizing their work and their safety. The Inalco Foundation offers them refuge and an environment where they can continue their research. By giving your support, you are helping to protect these carriers of knowledge and preserve the knowledge they hold, while enriching the global academic community.

5. Contribute to Inalco's international influence

Supporting the Inalco Foundation means contributing to the development of innovative programs that strengthen the institution's influence on the international stage. Your donations enable us to launch new initiatives, welcome researchers and students from all horizons, and forge academic and cultural partnerships around the world. In this way, you become a key player in Inalco's influence.
