This 2nd international colloquium follows the theme of the colloquium "Approches linguistiques comparatives grec moderne-français (GM-F)", organized in partnership by the National and Capodistrian University of Athens, the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INaLCO, Paris) and the UMR SeDyL, on October 30 and 31, 2020, the volume of which was published by the University Press of the National and Capodistrian University of Athens in 2022 : Modern Greek-French comparative linguistic approaches (pdf).

The colloquium"Comparative linguistic approaches to Modern Greek 2" aims to bring together linguists with expertise in the field of comparative approaches to GM with different languages: Romance (including French), Slavic, Balkan domain, Semitic and Turkic languages and other languages.

The recent renewal of the comparative field, both theoretically and methodologically, is favored by the new resources available enabling more in-depth and reliable work on data (large electronic corpora, computer processing, electronic collections of oral and/or written learner corpora/interlanguage corpora, etc.). Furthermore, this field, considered a priori as a branch of applied linguistics, benefits from its interaction with a number of fields of theoretical linguistics, which have themselves undergone major developments (linguistic typology, enunciative linguistics, contact linguistics, psycholinguistics and acquisition, cognitive linguistics and mental lexicon, etc.). This has provided a more circumscribed and solid theoretical and methodological foundation for such research than was possible through the general comparison of two (or more) linguistic systems or the comparability of pre-defined grammatical categories.

This 2nd edition of the colloquium aims to take stock of the most recent advances in this comparative field, with an opening towards:

- critical sociolinguistic approaches (sociolinguistic analyses of language representations and practices, gender-related issues)
- contact linguistics and plurilingualism
- critical discourse analysis and the development of tools for language teaching that take into account the above framework of reflection.

The opening towards these fields does not exclude proposals on other themes, always in a comparative perspective, including those of the 1st edition of the colloquium :

  • mode and modality, TAME
  • negation, interrogation
  • interface morphology/phonetics/phonology and syntax
  • interface syntax and semantics
  • formal semantics
  • syntax
  • textual linguistics
  • discourse markers
  • determination, in(definite), quantification, modifiers of degree
  • translation

This second meeting will also serve to set up an academic network (institutions, research laboratories, etc.) that will continue these exchanges. We are looking for contributions based on first-hand data that have not been the subject of other presentations or publications.

The symposium, organized in partnership by Laboratoire Sedyl (UMR 8202, INALCO-CNRS, IRD), the Department of French Language and Literature (National and Capodistrian University of Athens), and UR GEO-1340 (University of Strasbourg) will take place at INALCO in Paris, on September 13 and 14, 2024.

Interested colleagues are asked to send their abstracts (500-600 words, with bibliographic references)before April 15, 2024 to the email address:
AppLingCompGM.2@gmail.com

Authors will be notified of acceptance of their papers around mid-May 2024.

Each contribution will last 30 minutes, comprising a 20-minute presentation followed by a 10-minute discussion. The languages of the symposium are French, Greek and English.

Comparative linguistic approaches to Modern Greek 2

This second international conference is a continuation of the conference Approches linguistiques comparatives grec moderne-français which has been organized in partnership by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO, Paris) and the UMR Sedyl, on the 30th and 31st of October 2020. The proceedings of that conference have been published in 2022 by the NKUA Press and are available on the following site:

This year's conference Comparative linguistic approaches to Modern Greek 2 aims to bring together linguists with expertise in the field of comparative linguistic approaches between Modern Greek (MG) and languages such as Romance, Slavic, Balkan, Semitic, Turkic and others. The recent renewal of the comparative field, both theoretically and methodologically, is favored by new resources that allow linguists to work in a more in-depth and reliable manner on the data (large electronic corpora, informatics, interlanguage corpora, etc.). This field, considered a priori as a branch of applied linguistics, benefits from its interaction with a plurality of areas of theoretical linguistics which have themselves undergone significant developments (see, for instance, linguistic typology, discourse analysis, language contact linguistics, psycholinguistics and language acquisition, cognitive linguistics and studies on the mental lexicon). This development provided a more solid methodological basis for this field of research that surpasses the mere theoretical comparison between two languages.

The second edition of the conference aims to take stock of the most recent advances in this comparative field with an opening towards studies that share the abovementioned vein of reasoning and belong to the following fields:
-critical sociolinguistics (sociolinguistics of language practice, gender related studies),
-language contact linguistics and multilingualism,
-critical discourse analysis and the development of tools for language teaching.

The opening towards these fields does not exclude papers on comparative linguistic approaches to Modern Greek that aim to study other linguistic phenomena such as those studied in the first edition of the conference:

  • mode and modality
  • negation and question
  • morphology/phonetics/phonology and syntax interface
  • syntax/semantics interface
  • formal semantics
  • syntax and text linguistics
  • discourse particles
  • determination, (in)definites, quantification, degree modifiers
  • translation

This second meeting which, unlike the first will be held "in person" will also serve to establish an academic network of colleagues, departments, research laboratories, institutes that aim to continue these exchanges in the form of conferences of regular events organized by its members.

We invite original contributions with novel data that have not been published elsewhere. This conference organized in partnership by the Sedyl laboratory (UMR 8202, INALCO-CNRS, IRD), the Department of French Language and Literature of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the UR GEO-1340 of the University of Strasbourg will take place at the INALCO, Paris, France, on the 13th and the 14th of September 2024.

Abstracts (500-600 words max. references included) should be sent by the 15th of April 2024 to the following e-mail address:
AppLingCompGM.2@gmail.com

Authors will be informed of the acceptance of their proposals by the middle of May 2024.
