What would be an ethics of translation reflected from the migration issue in Europe? What values, what benchmarks could guide the way social workers in European countries welcome the language of new arrivals?
This book, the fruit of close collaboration between socio-medical professionals and university lecturers across Europe, aims to problematize such an ethic. Trivialized, avoided in reflection and debate, the encounter between languages is not surprising in social and clinical work. Yet day-to-day practice shows that, to overcome trauma and achieve a form of human conviviality, it is essential to take into account the phenomena linked to the diversity of these languages, which intermingle in encounters between migrants themselves, between generations, between migrants and the populations of European countries, and with specialized reception staff. The multitude of languages, their translation and tensions, and their harmonization, are all decisive issues in what may become the welcoming ethic for Europe.
Director
Arnold Castelain is a clinical psychologist working in the child protection sector with unaccompanied minors. He is also a Sinologist. He has worked as a consultant for the ISM Interprétariat association on recruitment and research issues. His work focuses on the links between clinical psychology, anthropology and translatology.
