Several questions preoccupy current research on Israeli literature in general, and poetry more specifically. Can it be said that modern and contemporary Hebrew poetry is, in fact, the same thing as as Israeli poetry? If not, what is the distinction drawn between them? On what basis? Historical? Political? Linguistic? Furthermore, does 1948, the year the State of Israel was established, mark the beginnings of this writing era, or rather was it an evolutionary process beginning in the early 20th century, during the period known as “the renaissance”? In other words, should the usual distinction be retained between pre-State literature and literature written after 1948?
This debate, which is gaining increasing importance, is historiographical in nature. It therefore also calls for examination of the links between poetry and the specific history of Modern Hebrew, Zionism, and the Holocaust, which raises the question as to the role of the national narrative of the past century in current poetic expression. Can another narrative be put forward today? What place in it does the intimate and personal hold? Starting from which period?
