Presentation
Demons and ghosts, gui 鬼 , are among the most prominent figures in Chinese culture, and continue to haunt society in China and its neighbors to this day.
Calling on medieval Buddhist taxonomies, pre-modern morality books, Chinese or Japanese philosophical debates, as well as literary works or field surveys, this first volume of Ghosts in the Far East of Yesterday and Today attempts to clarify the contours of the beings who, in East Asia, most closely resemble our "ghosts" and other "ghosts".
In the second volume of Ghosts in the Far East of Yesterday and Today, readers will find articles dealing with the ghostly problem in modern and contemporary times. The contributions focus on the spectral phenomenon in literature and the arts (novels, cinema, graphic arts) attempting to define what might be termed the aesthetics of phantasmagoria in the Far East of yesterday and today.
