Scientific report on Julien Sibileau's field mission to Kuwait (April 2023)
This mission was an opportunity for him to develop his research project on sung poetry in Kuwait. With Kuwaiti colleagues, he is working to enhance the sung poetic heritage in Kuwait through the implementation of a project to study the language of Kuwaiti songs from the 19th century onwards, with ʿAbdallah al-Faraǧ, a very important poet in the history of Kuwaiti poetry, right up to the present day. This field mission was an opportunity for him to collect collections of poetry in Kuwaiti dialect and literal Arabic, as well as to meet key players on the Kuwaiti cultural scene.
Julien Sibileau was also invited by Kuwait University's Arabic language department to talk to members of the department's teaching staff, as well as master's and doctoral students, about current research into the history of Arabic grammar and the history of the Arabic language.
This research mission follows on from Julien Sibileau's teaching assignments in literal Arabic over the past two years as part of the intensive Arabic language course organized by CEFREPA and INALCO. Thanks to the outstanding work of Prof. Makram Abbès, each year CEFREPA offers its students high-quality intensive training in both Arabic language and civilization. In addition to courses, trainees benefit from a high-quality cultural program including scientific conferences in Arabic, meetings with writers, visits to institutions, desert outings, etc.
