Orientalismes, chemin faisant" conference series
About the lecture series
The "Master Classes" and "Key Witnesses" lecture series organized by the Inalco Foundation have focused on reviving the scholarly and pragmatic traditions of Langues O’ respectively. The former invites leading academics, while the latter features frontline diplomats, prominent figures associated with our institution, to discuss their contributions to these traditions.
This new series, entitled "Orientalisms, Along the Way," aims to present four mosaic perspectives on orientalism, understood as "the study of a broad area spanning from the Balkans to Oceania, for both scholarly and practical purposes," produced either at or in proximity to Inalco. These perspectives cover four culturally significant areas for us: the Arab, Chinese, Indian, and Tibetan regions, listed alphabetically without any particular order. They span a period of a century and a half, from 1875 to 2025. In their diversity, they illustrate approaches to “scholarly” or “pragmatic” knowledge, sometimes intended for an academic audience, sometimes for a broader one, and occasionally for both, reflecting the unique harmony that defines Langues O’.
This series will offer an opportunity to bring diverse audiences together at our historic location on Rue de Lille.
