From essays to the desert? Pour une histoire comparée et trans-nationale des sites des essais nucléaires

Since autumn 2019, the team "Écrire l'histoire du Centre d'Expérimentation du Pacifique (CEP)", which brings together some fifteen researchers in history, art history, geography, sociology, literature and anthropology, has been organizing a seminar "Pour une histoire transnationale et comparée des installations et des essais nucléaires" (MSH du Pacifique-CRESAT-INALCO). The seminar takes into account the circulation and transfer of experiences surrounding the tests, whether by decision-makers, activists or the populations as a whole concerned by a regime of nuclearity that can be defined as the awareness of taking part in the life of nuclear sites and installations.

The audience for this seminar, the contacts made with French and foreign speakers and listeners, the desire to communicate the fruits of our research on the CEP but also to confront them with comparable or intertwined situations, have led us to organize an international colloquium devoted to nuclear test sites around the world, viewed from the angle of territory, politics and the environment. The colloquium will examine the choice of sites, the construction and operation of facilities, the players involved and the relationships that develop between them, and the legacy of places that are perceived as marginal, with deserts, steppes and oceans, but which occupy a central place in the memory of human societies, while remaining poorly documented.
