The scale and speed of urbanization in China since the 1980s is an unprecedented historical phenomenon. Even though it has already given rise to large-scale population movements that have already restructured Chinese society, urbanization is not yet complete. The round-table discussion will look at four contrasting cities to understand the political dynamics at work in the expansion of Chinese cities: Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Datong and Zhuhai, each representing singular development trajectories. Specializing respectively in each of these cities, where they have conducted in-depth field research, the speakers will highlight the political and social issues at work in contemporary urban transformations in China.
