Screening of the film "Our Silent Place" as part of Elitza Gueorguieva's writing residency.
This meeting is the second in a series organized as part of the writing residency of Franco-Bulgarian writer Elitza Gueorguieva at Inalco. She is leading two writing workshops for undergraduate and graduate students, and taking part in a series of meetings with women writers who share her experience of being translingual, i.e. having switched from their mother tongue to French, the language of their writing.
In her film Our Silent Place, Elitza Gueorguieva questions Aliona Gloukhova, a kind of writing double, about her relationship to her biography and to writing in another language: Aliona's father, a silent dissident and engineer at Chernobyl, mysteriously disappeared one day into the sea. Twenty years later, Aliona leaves her country, Belarus, to write a novel about this story, in a language other than her own.
The two writers will engage in dialogue after the film screening.
Aliona Gloukhova was born in Minsk (Belarus) in 1984. After studying visual arts in Saint Petersburg, then education in Poitiers, Madrid and Lisbon, she worked as a translator, journalist, teacher and cultural organizer. She holds a master's degree in creative writing from the University of Paris 8, and has lived in Pau since 2015. She is the author of Dans l'eau je suis chez moi (Verticales, 2018), which was adapted into a documentary drama, Notre endroit silencieux, directed by Elitza Gueorguieva (Les Films du Bilboquet) and two other novels published by Verticales, De l'autre côté de la peau (2020) and Nos corps lumineux (2023).
Elitza Gueorguieva was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. She has lived and worked in France since 2000, where she devotes herself to film, writing and performance projects. She has published two novels with Verticales: Les cosmonautes ne font que passer (2016) and Odyssée des filles de l'Est, appears with Verticales (2024). She has made several documentary films, including Chaque mur est une porte (2017) and Notre endroit silencieux (2021). She creates performances for various scenic venues.
This writing residency is carried out as part of the Ile-de-France Region's residency program. It is carried out by the Master of Literary Translation, with the support of the PLIDAM, CERLOM and CREE teams, and the collaboration of UMR THALIM.
