"Regards comparés": Koreas, thwarting destinies

Since 2012, Inalco has been a partner of the Jean Rouch Festival, screening films from the "Regards comparés" selection in the auditorium. This year, screenings will be held from November 25 to 28 on the theme of Korea. All screenings will be followed by a debate with filmmakers and experts.

Three stories, three portraits of Korean women, two of whom were assigned to "comfort" American soldiers in a military camp during the war, and the third was born of one of these forced liaisons. The filmmakers invent a filmic device for each of them, capturing the pain of these shattered lives amid the ruins of the camp, soon to be razed.

During the Second World War, many Korean women were forcibly prostituted by the Japanese army. This sexual slavery was planned with the complicity of the Korean state, and kept secret for many years. Although the archives have been destroyed, some women have found the strength to testify. They don't want to be forgotten, and find support in their families.

Under the Japanese occupation of Korea, a Japanese woman, went to Seoul, to join her Korean lover. At the end of the Second World War, she gave birth to a daughter in Pyongyang, then had to flee. She returned to Japan, alone. "I dream of this woman, this stranger, my unknown grandmother who disappeared on the island of Okinawa, nameless, faceless, isolated between two countries, both near and far. I dream of my mother, alone on the South Korean island of Kanghwa, so far from me too." Young Sun Noh
