As part of Rencontres avec les écrivains, poètes et traducteurs russes, the CREE in collaboration with the IPHI (Institut de philosophie indépendant, Paris) is pleased to invite you to the session "Les paradigmes littéraires" with the poet prose writer, literary historian, PhD in philosophy, Alexei Makushinsky. The title of his talk will be "Rakhil Bespalova, pupil of Léon Chestov and predecessor of Camus".

In Léon Chestov's life, there were two people who considered themselves (with or without reservation) his pupils: Benjamin Fondane and Rakhil Bespalova. While Fondane is at least known to Russian readers (at least his "Encounters with Leon Chestov" have been translated into Russian), Rakhil Bespalova (1895-1949) remains an unknown and mysterious figure. There is mystery in herself, in her tragic fate. We'll look at her biography, her main writings, her relations with Chestov and Fondane, and the influence she probably had on Albert Camus (who spoke of her with admiration). Camus's attitude towards Chestov will then be discussed.
