During French colonization, Huế, imperial capital of the Nguyễn dynasty (1802-1945), aroused a particular fascination among the French. While monarchical pageantry amazed painters and photographers, the monarchy itself was gradually stripped of its power. This presentation examines the works of French and Vietnamese artists, revealing the ambiguity of their productions: between admiration, propaganda and cultural appropriation on the French side, and adaptation, resistance and subversion on the Vietnamese side.
