“道”何以成为中国文化的最高原理？- Why “Dao” Have Been the Highest Principle in Chinese Culture?

The purpose of this report is to interpret how the deep cultural presuppositions leads to the dominance of Dao in Chinese culture throughout 2500 years. We will argue that, the reason why Dao becomes the unique belief in Chinese culture is largely due to what is called as the “one-world presupposition”(Li Zehou’s phrase) in Chinese culture, which can be summarized as the followings: (1) Heaven or the Universe(天或天地) as a whole is the only home where anything including God, gods, huma beings, spirits or souls, etc. has to live, for there is no world beyond this Heaven or the Universe; (2) Heaven or the Universe as an organic totality has its own purposes and standpoints in accordance with which anything, including God, gods, huma beings, spirits or souls, etc. has to behave;（3）Heaven or the Universe as the ultimate reality for Chinese people is the only greatest authority with the supreme value.
