On the occasion of its 18th General Assembly, held at the POLITEHNICA University of Bucharest on September 24, 2021, under the patronage of the President of Romania, the AUF elected the members of its new Board of Directors and its President.
For the first time, due to the pandemic, the AUF General Assembly took place in a hybrid format - face-to-face and by videoconference - to enable the widest possible participation by Rectors and representatives of its 1007 member universities and teaching and research establishments in nearly 120 countries worldwide. On this occasion, five university representatives were elected to the AUF Board of Directors for the Western Europe region. They are:
- Ms Virginie DUPONT, from the Université de Bretagne-Sud (France) & her deputy Mr Guillaume GELLÉ, from the Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne (France)
- Madame Emmanuelle GARNIER, Université Toulouse Jean Jaurès (France) & her alternate Madame Christine FERNANDEZ-MALOINGE, Université de Poitiers (France)

In addition to electing the new Board of Directors, the General Assembly gave Rector Slim Khalbous the opportunity to present the White Paper on the Francophonie in Science resulting from the Global Consultation carried out by the AUF in 2020, as well as the organization's new strategy for the period 2021-2025.
