Introduction to the speakers

About the conference "Sa majesté la cumbia", by Julian Silva and Helena Calle from the Académie Afrocaribe de Paris (Première partie)

We offer you a fascinating journey that traces the origins of what we know today as "cumbia". Across the Atlantic Ocean, to the shores of the Colombian Caribbean Sea, down the majestic Magdalena River -the largest and most populated river in Colombia- we'll explore the meeting of African instruments and cultures with the indigenous communities of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the "heart of the world". This encounter will give birth to a unique fusion of languages and customs brought by Europeans, allowing the emergence of the most emblematic rhythm of an entire continent: cumbia.

About the band LA LOM (Concert)

In the vibrant tapestry of Los Angeles’s music scene, LA LOM stands out for its ability to seamlessly weave together the diverse genres and cultures of the city into its music. Short for The Los Angeles League of Musicians, LA LOM is composed of LA natives Zac Sokolow (Guitar), Jake Faulkner (Bass), and Nicholas Baker (Drums/Percussion).

The trio, whose roots go back to 2019, soon began experimenting with a genre-transcending repertoire that reflects the diverse musical diaspora of Angelenos. Their sound blends the soulful ballads from the 1950s and ’60s, classic Mexican Boleros and the Cumbia Sonidera, that are woven into the very fabric of the Los Angeles’ soundscape, resonating through the streets from car stereos, backyard parties, and lively dance halls. Their sonic palette also encompasses the guitar-driven twang of Peruvian Chicha and Bakersfield Country.

LA LOM have quickly ascended to playing to thousands of people and have captured the attention of Beck, Vampire Weekend and Zane Lowe.
