"Typology of evidential systems: 1. Tibetic languages"

This series of study days proposes a reflection on the typology of evidential systems and in particular the examination of the interaction, on the one hand between the various evidential categories themselves, and on the other hand between evidential and epistemic categories. In a contrastive approach, each day will host presentations devoted to fully grammaticalised evidential systems found in languages spoken in a variety of geographical areas (Himalayan and Tibetan Plateau, Amazonian, Caucasian, North Asian, etc.).)

For this first day, special interest will be given to the functioning of evidentiality in Tibetan languages (China, India, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan and marginally Burma), which feature some of the world's most complex evidential-epistemic systems, but also on other Tibeto-Burman languages such as Qiangic, Gyarongic and East Bodish, as well as on other phyla (Turkic, Mongolic, etc.) present in the Tibetan area.) present in the Tibetosphere.

These Study Days entitled Typology of Evidential Systems (TSE) are proposed by Michel Tournadre as part of a project supported by the IUF. They involve collaboration between Lacito and Inalco, and have been developed in consultation with Françoise Robin (Inalco) and Eric Mélac (Université Paul Valéry - Montpellier 3).

Other colleagues specializing in Tibetan languages or Tibeto-Burman languages with complex evidential systems are likely to take part in the seminar.

They will be held at least once a year, in the form of one or two study days, alternately at Lacito and Inalco, but will also have a hybrid format (online) that will allow the participation of foreign colleagues and students.
