JEP 2021: visit Inalco's historic site!
On Saturday, September 18, 2021 from 1pm to 6pm, Inalco's Maison de la Recherche will be open to the public, on the occasion of the 38th edition of the European Heritage Days. Renovated in 2019, this former mansion houses over 200 years of Oriental language teaching history in France. Indeed, the École des Langues Orientales moved into this building in 1874. Construction began in the middle of the 18th century and was completed in 1935, with the original north wing still standing today. In 2020, architectural elements such as the ornate ceiling of the monumental staircase, the handrails and marble surrounding the staircase, and the moldings and painted medallions on the ceilings of the historic salons were awarded the "Heritage of Regional Interest" label by the Île-de-France Region.
Since the creation of the École spéciale des langues orientales in 1795, which became Inalco in 1971, the institute has remained faithful to its mission of educating French people (and the foreign students it welcomes) in the knowledge of living oriental languages. Today, the site houses - among other things - research units, the doctoral school, the Presses de l'Inalco, the research department, the Fondation Inalco and a wealth of heritage to discover. Our specialists will be on hand to present our teaching, publishing and research expertise at your convenience.
The Maison de la Recherche is open to the public for a guided tour. A tour will be offered, tracing the history of the establishment and its heritage.
