Adapted from Andrus Kivirähk's cult novel The November Gooseberries, this film plunges us into the fantastical world of an Estonian village in the days of serfdom, at a time when pagan beliefs and magic permeated mentalities and daily life. To survive, the peasants enlist the help of their kratts, creatures made from old objects for whom they buy a soul from the Devil. In this harsh world, hardly conducive to the nobility of sentiment, two thwarted loves intertwine: Liina is in love with Hans, but he only has eyes for the young girl from the manor... The dark yet comical world invented by Andrus Kivirähk is here sublimated by black and white and sumptuous photography.
