The Mediterranean as a Space of (Im)mobility: Circulation and Stasis in Times of Bordering

How can we think of the Mediterranean as a space of circulation, passage and anchorage, but also as a space of blockage, waiting and control? This keynote address, organized as part of the BIP event "Lives Between Shores: Migration Across the Mediterranean", will be given by Camille Schmoll, Director of Studies at EHESS, on the issues of mobility and immobility in the Mediterranean at a time of tightening borders.

As a specialist in Mediterranean migration, borders and mobility, Camille Schmoll will reflect on the Mediterranean as a space traversed by contradictory dynamics: transnational circulations, policies of control, experiences of waiting, forms of stasis and reconfigurations of migratory trajectories. His talk, entitled "The Mediterranean as a Space of (Im)mobility: Circulation and Stasis in Times of Bordering", will explore the social, political and spatial effects of contemporary borders, and the ways in which they transform the journeys, temporalities and experiences of people undergoing migration.

This conference is open to all and accessible without prior registration.
