This text, drawing on sources of exceptional richness and diversity, centres on the fate of the family of Alexandra Crichton-Bobrikoff, a lady-in-waiting at the Russian Imperial Court who fled the Bolsheviks three times : when she secretly left Petrograd in 1921; upon her release as a Soviet hostage in Poland in 1939; and when she left Prague in 1945, shortly before the Red Army entered the city.
