Literary paradigms" session - Meetings with Russian writers, poets and translators
As part of Rencontres avec les écrivains, poètes et traducteurs russes, the CREE in collaboration with the IPHI (Institut de philosophie indépendant, Paris) is pleased to invite you to the session "Les paradigmes littéraires"with translator, Marianne Taymanova. The title of her talk will be "Traduire impossible jeter": ma collaboration avec Milan Kundera.
The translator of the works of G. de Nerval, G. Apollinaire, P. Valéry and many other classics of French literature will talk about her collaboration with Milan Kundera on the translation of his book of essays "Les Testaments trahis", the difficulties and the untranslatable in translation, her own mistakes and those of others, and the risks and joys of this profession.
Author biography
Marianne Taymanova was born in Leningrad. She graduated from the French Department of Leningrad University, taught French and pursued doctoral studies at Leningrad State University. She began doing literary translations in her youth, and attended a literary translation seminar at the Leningrad Writers' Union. From 1990, she lived in England, where for 23 years she taught Russian language and literature, as well as various aspects of English-to-Russian translation at Durham University. In Russia, her translations of books by G. Casanova, G. de Nerval, Dumas (père et fils), J. Verne, J.-H. Rosny, M. Leblanc, P. Valéry, A. Maurois, G. Simenon, S. Japrisot, M. Kundera, D. Foenkinos, C. Millet have been published. She has also translated works by F. Rabelais, G. Apollinaire, P. Boulle and others. Since 2015, she has lived in Atlanta, USA.
