DÉCRIPT Seminar “Universalisms & Global Governance” - Session 2

Guests: Coralie Klipfel (Lecturer in Public Law at INALCO) and Thibaut Fleury Graff (Professor of Public Law at Paris Panthéon-Assas University)

Abstract: This session offers to explore the relationship between international law and civilizational narratives. It invites participants to explore how certain Western universalist representations have shaped the formation of international law and global governance - illustrated, for instance, by the notion of « standard of civilization » - as well as the ways in which law continues to be both mobilized and invoked today to support or legitimize practices as well as specific visions of the international order. The session will also shed light on the contestations of these narratives, whether articulated by actors from the Global South or by various critical currents within the academic field of international law, with the aim of illuminating the dynamics through which these challenges contribute to the ongoing reconfiguration of the universal on the international stage.

Registration for the seminar is open until December 9th at 4:00 PM. Zoom link provided the day before the event.
