This talk will address the future of areal studies in a global context, drawing on examples from Central Asia.

Areal studies, developed in the USA during the Second World War, aim to address international and transnational issues, requiring an in-depth understanding of local realities and a multidisciplinary approach. The aim of the EASI network is to promote this field of research by fostering dialogue between different European perspectives.

Christopher J. Gerry is Rector, Dean of the Graduate School of Development and Professor at the University of Central Asia. His work focuses on sustainable development and public health in Central Asia, and he has accumulated extensive applied research experience in the fields of health economics, inequality and labor markets. He was previously Head of the School of Global and Regional Studies at Oxford University.
