Presentation

The aim of this book is to provide a practical grounding in the spoken and written Tibetan language in its so-called “common” or “standard” variant, i.e. the language spoken in the diaspora, which is largely based on Lhasa Tibetan. It is aimed at absolute beginners, and its theory and detailed grammatical explanations are based on the Manuel de tibétain standard by Nicolas Tournadre and Sangda Dorje (L’Asiathèque, 2009), supplemented by a large number of exercises in the use of the language in everyday communication situations.

The course is progressive, with twelve lessons structured around communicative objectives and grammatical points. Each lesson includes a vocabulary list, a summary of the essential grammar points whenever necessary and exercises based on the four fundamental language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Recordings are available for the dialogues and some of the exercises, and an answer key is provided at the end of each lesson for most of the exercises.
