Presentation
Resulting from over ten years of research, this essay offers a fresh perspective on one of the most striking migratory phenomena of the early 21st century: the mass settlement of Syrians fleeing the war in Istanbul (between 2012 and 2024). Far from simplistic or homogenizing views, it combines urban geography, migration studies, and personal testimony to present a dynamic and evolving portrait of these populations.
By focusing on their modes of presence and trajectories within the metropolis of Istanbul, the aim is to observe both what the refugees reveal about contemporary Istanbul and what Istanbul reveals about these refugees in all their diversity.
It becomes apparent that, despite widespread stigmatization and political instrumentalization, this highly unevenly distributed population has gradually faded from view—blending into the ordinary fabric of metropolitan life.
