Salem Chaker is a professor emeritus of Berber studies affiliated with IREMAM at Aix-Marseille University, where he spent most of his career, as well as with INALCO (Paris). He is a specialist in descriptive and historical Berber linguistics and the author of several books and numerous articles and entries on linguistics and sociolinguistics. He edits The Berber Encyclopedia.
