Teaching

The candidate will teach courses covering the history, geography and contemporary society of Poland. Teaching will cover the ancient, modern and contemporary periods, and Poland in its various historical configurations, including the Republic of Two Nations and interwar Poland. This may include themes such as the Polish diaspora and memorial practices. They will also be required to teach regional undergraduate courses and take part in collective Master's seminars on Central Europe.
The candidate must have a perfect command of the Polish language, attested by publications. Knowledge of other languages of that space (German, Lithuanian, Rromani, Russian, Ukrainian, Yiddish, etc.) would be an asset.
From a disciplinary point of view, teaching must be based on a solid background in history and social studies, combined with a proven ability to analyze source texts in Polish. Skills and experience in adopting a transdisciplinary approach, integrating perspectives such as geography, social sciences, socio-historical studies and cultural anthropology, will be appreciated.
They will be able to devote part of their time to cross-disciplinary teaching at Inalco's bachelor's and master's levels.
The recruited lecturer will also be expected to contribute to the development of pedagogical tools, including digital ones, as part of the projects currently being developed at the establishment. In this respect, competence in ICTE is desirable.
They may also be called upon to provide pedagogical and methodological support to students, and to supervise Master's theses in their field of specialization.

Research

The candidate will consider the convergence between his/her work and Inalco's intellectual and scientific identity, as embodied in the collective projects carried out by the establishment and its research units. Depending on the candidate's areas of specialization, he/she will be able to join the research unit of his/her choice from among Inalco's own teams and UMRs under the (co)supervision of Inalco, in particular:
CREE, Centre de recherche Europes-Eurasie

The candidate's research will focus on one of the major periods of the 20th century, or on the Third Polish Republic. Candidates are expected to demonstrate national and international visibility in their field, notably through recent publications that contribute to current debates in their discipline. The ability to bring disciplines into dialogue in their research activity is desirable.
Depending on their research projects, candidates will be able to integrate their work into the “Actors and Practices” or “Crises, Conflicts and Risks” axes of the 2025-2029 project. Candidates are invited to demonstrate that their work can cover a geographical area that extends beyond the political borders of present-day Poland. Their ability to articulate the study of Poland with its regional environment, according to the territorial configurations it underwent during the 20th century, will therefore be valued.

In addition to an excellent level (C1 minimum) in Polish, a proven command of English is required, and knowledge, at least passive, of one or more other languages (notably German, Yiddish, Russian, Ukrainian or Lithuanian) is an asset.
The candidate is also expected to be a member of CREE's “History, Politics and Culture in Central Europe” doctoral seminar team. Depending on their areas of expertise, they will also join the regional seminars team of the Master's program. Finally, they are expected to make themselves available as much as necessary for the research unit's promotion activities.
