The authentic and the fabricated in language didactics in the digital age
Argumentary
The debate is an old one: as language teachers and designers of learning tools, whether classic or innovative, we are necessarily faced with choices to be made between:
- forging texts and dialogues ourselves that are representative of the way the language works and of the values of the culture we are charged with making understood and transmitted, particularly when we are native speakers;
- collecting extracts, not having been developed for teaching purposes and which we will judge authentic to varying degrees, in order to illustrate a panel of discourse genres (written, oral, electronic) as varied as possible.
Such a debate deserves to be renewed at a time when every learner and teacher has direct and immediate access to linguistic reality, in all its phonetic, lexical, morpho-syntactic, pragmatic or stylistic dimensions. The infinite linguistic resources constantly available on the Internet naturally invite sorting, sampling and exploitation.
The aim is to reflect on the notion of authenticity and the challenges it represents in the teaching-learning of languages and cultures, in relation to the needs of our audiences and the capacities to be developed in our classrooms, in the face of the challenges of technologies, old and new, called upon to facilitate the description and transmission of the various aspects of language including its cultural dimension.
