The Inalco Foundation welcomed Sylvie Bermann, one of the leading figures in French diplomacy, for a new edition of the Cycle Grands Témoins. This not-to-be-missed event invites personalities in exceptional circumstances to share their experience of front-line diplomacy.
An extraordinary diplomatic career
Alumna in Chinese from Inalco, Sylvie Bermann has held ambassadorial posts in three strategic countries:
- China (2011-2014)
United Kingdom (2014-2017)Russia (2017-2019)
Elevated to the dignity of Ambassador of France in 2019, she embodies an exceptional and rare diplomatic career path.
"The Bear and the Dragon: deciphering geopolitical power relations
In this lecture, at the crossroads of history and geopolitics, Sylvie Bermann analyzes the strategy of the "neo-empires", China and Russia, the representations of the world and of themselves that they have forged, and their relationship in a neighborhood of four centuries. Placing her remarks in the long term, dear to Inalco, she outlines the consequences for the "recomposition of the world"

An inspiring dialogue
The evening opened with words from Philippe Advani, Chairman of the Foundation, before continuing in the form of an exchange with Nicolas Idier, senior civil servant, writer and sinologist.
Students in the International Relations course, accompanied by the Promethei association, then enriched the debate with their questions, before an audience made up of personalities from the diplomatic and military worlds, partners and friends of the Foundation.
A dedication and a musical moment
The meeting continued with a book signing for L'Ours et le Dragon (Éditions Tallandier), followed by a convivial reception and a concert of Russian music given by the Balalaïka Production association, under the direction of Micha Tcherkassy, offering a cultural highlight to conclude the evening.
A Foundation now at cruising speed
The evening coincides with the closing of the 4th fiscal year of the Inalco Foundation, which has now reached cruising speed, with a full operational team, supported by healthy finances and serving some sixty projects that very broadly cover Inalco's exceptionally wide range of geographies and disciplines.
