CESSMA
The Centre d'études en sciences sociales sur les mondes africains, américains et asiatiques, is a joint research unit created in 2014 with triple supervision: Université Paris Cité, Inalco and the Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD). The laboratory's mission is to analyze the historical and spatial configurations of development and globalization dynamics.

The laboratory's mission is to analyze the historical and spatial configurations of development and globalization dynamics. Whether they come from the tradition of cultural areas or development studies, all members of the unit share a common social science practice marked by interdisciplinarity, comparatism and dialogue with scientific partners in the worlds they study.
The unit is multidisciplinary, bringing together historians, geographers, sociologists, anthropologists, economists, demographers and urban planners. Fields of investigation are in Central and South America, Africa and the Arab world, South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia.
