This book presents an overview of the history of the Komis and their various ethnic groups, reflections on language as an identitiary marker, on the first Komi poet, Ivan Kuratov, and the opera he inspired, and finally on the religious practices of the Komis today. A text by a 19th-century Russian author and a translation of a text by the recently deceased Vladimir Timin complete the picture.
Editors
Eva Toulouze is a researcher in the Department of Ethnology at the University of Tartu, as well as a lecturer at INALCO in Finno-Ugric languages and cultures. She also translates poetry.
Sébastien Cagnoli is a writer and translator of Finno-Ugric languages. A freelance researcher in languages and civilizations, he has also published numerous works on Uralic literatures - in particular Komie literature.
