Quechua language MOOC: registration opens on 7 September!
The Quechua Language Starter Kit
This MOOC is a course in Southern Quechua, a language spoken by around 4.2 million people in southern Peru, Bolivia and northern Chile and Argentina. It focuses on three variants spoken in Peru and Bolivia, emphasising mutual intelligibility between these variants.
It is aimed at everyone, whether or not you have had any previous exposure to Quechua.
The MOOC is available in French, Spanish and English.

What you will learn
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- How to approach someone and ask them questions
- Introduce yourself and say where you’re from
- Talk about your family
- Forming simple sentences to talk about your surroundings
Format
This MOOC lasts 6 weeks.
Each week begins with a video of a dialogue in Quechua, around which the lesson is then structured.
The 5 course modules follow this progression each week:
- Vocabulary is first introduced (with audio and illustrations), accompanied by exercises to help you memorise it.
- Grammar explanations then help learners understand how the language works.
- Exercises based on the opening dialogue will help you gain a deeper understanding of it.
From week 3 onwards, an interview with a native Quechua speaker (subtitled in French, Spanish or English) will immerse you in Andean culture.
Each week concludes with exercises to assess your progress.
Assessment and Certification
Daily self-marked exercises will allow you to check what you’ve learnt.
Achieving a pass mark of 50 per cent in the marked exercises will enable you to obtain a free completion badge certifying your attendance and what you have learnt.
If you wish, you can sit a paid exam under remote supervision to obtain an official certificate worth 4 ECTS credits.
