Michel Vié, Professor Emeritus at Inalco, passes away

Professor at Inalco until 1995, he played a pioneering role in the historiography of Japan in France. His two "Que-Sais-Je?", Histoire du Japon. Des origines à Meiji (1969) and Le Japon contemporain (1971), many times reprinted, have served as a reference for generations of students. His other major book, Le Japon et le monde au XXe siècle (Masson, 1995), paints an in-depth portrait of Japan from Meiji to 1952, including developments on the colonial empire at a time when few japonologues went beyond the perimeter of the archipelago.
