Dr. Farhad DAFTARY, Director of the Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS)
Dr. Farhad Daftary received his early education in Iran, Italy and England, then undertook his university studies from 1958 to 1971 in the United States. He earned his doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley. He subsequently held various academic and government posts in Iran, before joining the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London in 1988, where he is currently Director and Head of Academic Research and Publications.
Dr. Daftary is a consultant editor of the Encyclopaedia Iranica, co-editor (with W. Madelung) of the Encyclopaedia Islamica, as well as general editor of the Ismaili Heritage Series, the Ismaili Texts and Translations Series and the Shi'i Heritage Series. An authority on Ismaili studies, he has written and edited twenty books in the field, including The Ismā'īlīs : Their History and Doctrines (1990; 2nd ed., 2007); The Assassin Legends (1994); A Short History of the Ismailis (1998); Ismaili Literature: A Bibliography of Sources and Studies (2004); A History of Shi'i Islam (2013), and (with Z. Hirji), Islam: An Illustrated Journey (2018). He has also written over 50 articles and book chapters and some 150 encyclopedia entries. Dr. Daftary's books have been translated into Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Urdu, Gujarati and many European languages.
The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) is an academic institution of higher education dedicated to the study of Islam, with a particular focus on its Ismaili and broader Shi'i traditions. It was founded in 1977 by His Highness the Aga Khan IV, the 49th Imam of the Ismaili Muslims. The Ismailis are the second largest Shiʿa Muslim community, after Twelver Shiʿas, and are settled in over 25 countries across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, North America, and Australia. Signing of a cooperation agreement between the IIS and the Inalco Foundation
The day after this conference, the Inalco Foundation was honored to sign a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the Institute of Ismaili Studies. This agreement will strengthen the dialogue between these two entities with a view to future cooperation. We are therefore delighted to be able to begin this collaboration with the IIS.
