The 2023 program of Regards comparés features a selection of documentary films representing Oceania. Over the course of four days, viewers will take part in a geographical and historical journey and set out to discover the social, environmental, cultural and political issues inherent to this continent. This event is organized by the Comité du film ethnographique and Inalco.

From a European perspective, Oceania is still a continent with little visibility, a distant margin confined to clichés. Yet the peoples of the continent-ocean are opening up their voices-(e). Today, they are at the crossroads of crucial contemporary issues: their resilience and that of their island environment in the face of human action and climate change, their cultural affirmation in a globalized world, and the assertion of sovereignty for peoples whose history has been marked by colonization. This year, the festival and the Regards comparés focus on these challenges and on the vitality and agentivity of contemporary Oceanian societies.

Environmental safeguarding, the dynamics of cultural expression and the trajectories of sovereignty thus appear as different facets of contemporary Oceania's societies, societies that unfold beyond colonial legacies and globalization. We invite you to follow and listen to their singular voices.
