Chinese Buddhism Study Week

Following on from the sixth edition of Printemps du CEIB (March 2024), another week of academic events will be organized in April by CEIB, focusing on Chinese Buddhism through different eras. Four international conferences will be held on April 22, 23 and 26, 2024, featuring Chen Chien Huang (University of Hong Kong), Ge Zhaoguang (Fudan University, China) and Dai Yan (Fudan University, China).

Each year, CEIB activities are structured around several highlights (Le printemps du CEIB, la rentrée du CEIB) and lecture cycles. This year, we're organizing a thematic and areal week, around Chinese Buddhism (medieval and modern periods).

On Monday, April 22, 2024 (2pm-4pm), we'll be listening to Professor Chen Chien Huang 陳劍鍠 (University of Hong Kong) for a talk on: 當代漢傳佛教的凈土思想: 以印順、星雲、聖嚴三大師為探討對象 [Thinking about the Pure Land within contemporary Chinese Buddhism: the masters Yin Shun, Hsing-Yun and Sheng Yen, between examination and discussion].

On Tuesday, April 23, 2024 (10am-12pm), we will welcome Professor Ge Zhaoguang 葛兆光 (Fudan University, China), who will present a lecture on: 面對新世界:從 1893年芝加哥萬國宗教大會看近代中日佛教的差異 [Facing the new world: Distinctions between Chinese and Japanese Buddhism in modern times, analyzed through the prism of the Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893].

On Friday, April 26, 2024 (morning 10am-12pm - afternoon 2pm-4pm), we will be holding two concluding lectures:

  • A lecture by Professor Dai Yan 戴燕 (Fudan University, China) who will speak on 中國中古時代的比丘尼:以寶唱《比丘尼傳》為中心 [Les bhikṣuṇī dans la Chine médiévale: Biographie des bhikṣuṇī de Baochang] as part of Sylvie Hureau's "Chinese Buddhism" seminar (EPHE/CRCAO).
  • A lecture by Professor Ge Zhaoguang 葛兆光 (Fudan University, China) who will speak for a second lecture, on the theme: 也在 "兩千年未有之大變局 "之中:理解晚清中國佛學復興的四個背景 [At the heart of unique recompositions for two millennia: Four contextual analyses of the revival of Buddhist studies at the end of the Qing dynasty].

Speakers will speak in Chinese, without translation.
