Workshop 1: Introductory session to public and community engagement

This 2-hour training session is an ideal introductory session for postgraduate researchers (PGRs) looking to learn more about public engagement, and engaging public audiences with their research. The workshop is aimed at researchers in their 3rd year and beyond with a firm idea of their research but is open to all PGRs. The session is designed to provide an introduction to public and community engagement and helps you develop audience-focused public engagement activities for diverse audiences. This online session will be delivered by experts from the University of Birmingham Public and Cultural Engagement Team.

Date: 10 June 2024, 10:30-12:30 CEST (9:30-11:30 BST / 11:30-13:30 EEST)

Speakers: Lauren DEERE, Head of Public and Community Engagement at the University of Birmingham

Format: Online Zoom meeting

Language: English

Participants: Researchers from all universities, regardless of their career level, including PhD students and young researchers.

Limitation of number of participants: No

Workshop 2: Podcasts and video blogs for science communication

Image and sound are two powerful forms of communication. In this workshop we will talk about how to make the most of both through two very useful and trendy tools: the podcast and the video blog. We will reflect on why to use one or the other depending on our research, purpose, or target audience and we will go through the implementation of both tools with simple, open-source software and apps. In addition, we will give some very useful tips to achieve our goals and, of course, we will address all the doubts you may have about them.

Date: 11 June 2024, 10:30-12:30 CEST (9:30-11:30 BST / 11:30-13:30 EEST)

Speakers: Ana FERNANDEZ MARTINEZ, Science Communicator, University of Murcia

Format: Online Zoom meeting

Language: English

Participants: Researchers from all universities, regardless of their career level, including PhD students as young researchers.

Limitation of number of participants: No

Workshop 3: Speech writing in practice to the general public

As a speaker, you want to reach out to your audience. An important part of making your message heard is to prepare a good manuscript. But how can you effectively grab the audience’s attention, make an impression on them and clarify to them your (perhaps) complicated research topic? These issues are the focus of this course. We will alternate between short lectures and workshop activities aiming to increase your knowledge of:

  • how to emphasise the main points in your speech
  • how to prepare a manuscript suitable for the ear, and not for the eye
  • how to choose the most comfortable and effective type of a manuscript for you and the purpose of your speech
  • how to remember what to say and help the audience remember what you said
  • how to make appropriate stylistic decisions in your speech

Date: 12 June 2024, 9:00-13:00 CEST (8:00-12:00 BST / 10:00-14:00 EEST)

Speakers: Cecilia OLSSON JERS, PhD, Associate Professor in Swedish language with focus on rhetoric

Anna WÄRNSBY, PhD, Associate Professor in English linguistics

Format: Online Zoom meeting

Language: English

Participants: Researchers from all universities, regardless of their career level, including PhD students and young researchers.

Limitation of number of participants: 20

Workshop 4: Interactions between science and societies - an introduction to why and how engage in science communication activities

This course will use current research as well as the practical experience of the trainer to brush a broad view of the context and challenges of science communication. Participants will be invited to reflect on their interests, doubts, and motivations regarding science communication. They will collectively come up with collaborative science communication projects in small working groups, while receiving tips, guidance, and ideas to enrich them.

Aims of the course:

  • get familiar with science communication
  • learn basic concepts of science communication research and practice
  • explore your own motivations and inspiration for engaging in science communication activities
  • create the basis of a collaborative science communication project

Date: 13 June 2024, 9:00 to 12:00 CEST (8:00-11:00 BST / 10:00-13:00 EEST)

Speakers: Ulysse PEDREIRA-SEGADE, Science engagement project manager, Science communication and engagement office, Nantes Université

Format: Online Zoom meeting

Language: English

Participants: Researchers from all universities, regardless of their career level, including PhD students and young researchers.

Limitation of number of participants: 25

Application process

The workshops are free of charge for all participants from EUniWell member universities. In the interest of an optimal learning experience, the organisers reserve the right to adjust the composition of groups to include representatives of the different universities as much as possible – so first-come, first-served will not always be possible.
