The doctorate
The doctorate is organized within the doctoral school in accordance with the decree of May 25, 2016.
The doctoral program
The ED265 doctoral program generally takes three years of full-time equivalent research time. In other cases, doctoral studies may take up to six years. Administrative registration is renewed each year on the advice of the Doctoral School Council, until the thesis is defended. Upon explicit motivation, a gap year is authorized during the curriculum.
Thesis preparation takes place within the Doctoral School, in one of the research units and under the control and responsibility of one or more thesis director(s).
Obligations
Doctoral students must regularly follow the doctoral training provided by the research units and the Doctoral School (seminars, study days, colloquia, etc.) and present the progress of their work each year before an individual doctoral student monitoring committee (CSID).
Diploma
The doctoral degree is conferred after public defense of the thesis. The degree is prepared in the following disciplines:

Co-supervision and co-tutelles
Co-supervision and co-tutelles
Co-direction
A thesis may be supervised by two thesis directors (one at Inalco, the second at another French or foreign institution) if the thesis subject requires support from another discipline or specialty. A convention de codirection is then established.
Co-tutelle
The arrêté du 25 mai 2016 establishes the terms and conditions for setting up international thesis co-tutelle. This formula is aimed at French or foreign doctoral students in their 1stre year of doctoral studies and is backed by a convention de co-tutelle. The doctoral student registers simultaneously at both establishments, (the doctoral student is exempt from registration fees at one of the two establishments). They spend alternating periods in each of the two countries, conduct their research under the supervision of two co-directors, one French, the other foreign, and are awarded, on the basis of a single thesis defended before a joint jury, the title of doctor from each of the two establishments (double diploma).
The co-supervision procedure can only be initiated once the doctoral student has been accepted for a doctoral thesis and enrolled at Inalco.
Co-supervision with another foreign higher education institution (enrolled at two universities) reinforces the international dimension of doctoral schools, encourages doctoral students' mobility in different scientific and cultural spaces, and develops scientific cooperation between French and foreign research units.
Thesis submission and defense
Thesis submission and defense
Since 1er June 2013, electronic thesis deposit has been mandatory. This is the legal deposit of the thesis and applies to all theses, even confidential ones.
The doctoral student
At least 3 months before the defense, the doctoral student obligatorily contacts the doctoral secretariat to deposit his or her thesis; the composition of the jury will have previously been validated by the establishment (read the document Defense Procedure carefully).
After the defense, the doctoral student will decide whether or not to publish the final version of his or her thesis. Depending on his/her choice, the electronic version of his/her thesis will be distributed on the internet, on the platforms selected by Inalco (on theses.fr, and on tel.archives-ouvertes.fr).
Preventing plagiarism

Preventing plagiarism
Inalco's management has decided to roll out COMPILATIO, a plagiarism detection software program for all teaching-research staff.
This tool will make it possible to quickly identify "copy-pasted" passages in each document submitted by doctoral students, and their likely sources on the web.
