A variety of funding options are available. Students enrolled in doctoral programs can benefit from one-off or regular funding.
Doctoral contract
Doctoral contract
The doctoral contract is open to all doctoral students (regardless of age) wishing to enroll in the first year of their thesis. A 3-year C.D.D. under public law, renewable for a further year if necessary, it is the main form of support available to students preparing a doctorate. Created by decree on April 23, 2009, the doctoral contract provides all the social guarantees of an employment contract that complies with public law.
The activities entrusted to the contract doctoral student may be exclusively devoted to research, but may also include other missions: teaching, valorization of research results, dissemination of scientific and technical information, expertise.
Recruitment rentrée 2024-2025
The recruitment of contract doctoral students falls within the general framework set by the Arrêté du 25 mai 2016 relatif au doctorat. Candidates must meet the eligibility requirements in terms of academic qualifications on the date of the auditions. Candidates draw up an application file, which must be sent to the Doctoral School according to the schedule in force for the academic year.
Doctoral contracts are awarded on the basis of the quality of the thesis project and the academic curriculum.
Application for a doctoral contract is carried out in three phases:
1. Digital submission of applications on a dedicated form to the doctoral secretariat.
2. Eligibility phase
- The host research unit decides on the eligibility of candidates (favorable - unfavorable to the candidate's audition).
- Double evaluation of application files by two members of the Doctoral School Council.
- On the basis of the application file and the two evaluations, the Doctoral School Council decides on the candidate's eligibility to audition.
3. Admission phase
- Audition of successful candidates. Candidates present their research project (10 minutes), followed by an interview with members of the Doctoral School Council (10 minutes). The audition takes place exclusively in person at the Maison de la Recherche, 2 rue de Lille 75007 Paris
- Deliberation by the Doctoral School Council.
The Doctoral School Council bases its decision on 7 pre-established criteria.
The criteria used by jury members to assess the research project relate to:
- The quality and originality of the project
- The appropriateness of the project to the candidate's career path and doctoral supervision
- .e's background and doctoral supervision (thesis director and research unit)
- The written presentation
- The conceptual and methodological rigor
- The use of primary and secondary sources in the "oriental" language(s) concerned by the research project
- The use of primary and secondary sources in the "oriental" language(s) concerned by the research project
- The use of primary and secondary sources in the "oriental" language(s) concerned by the research project feasibility within the 3-year reference period
- Oral presentation and quality of exchanges during the audition
The Doctoral School Council deliberates on a main list and a complementary list of candidates selected for a research contract.e-s selected for a doctoral contract.
The proposal to award a doctoral contract is equivalent to authorization to enroll in a doctoral program. The awarding of the contract is subject to actual enrolment in doctoral studies at Inalco

CIFRE contract
The contrats CIFRE (conventions industrielles de formation par la recherche) enable the recruitment of a PhD student by a private company.
- Campaign: Applications are submitted throughout the year.
- Procedure: via the website www.anrt.asso.fr
This scheme is managed by the ANRT (Association Nationale de la Recherche et de la Technologie) and funded by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research.
The thesis is carried out by conducting research in the company and in the host research unit of the doctoral school to which it is attached.

DOCTORAL SCHOOL APPLICATION DEADLINE: April 22, 2024, for a mission departure between 1er July and December 31, 2024 .
These grants are awarded by the Doctoral School Council. They are subject to the favorable opinion of the thesis director (attach a letter of recommendation from the director). They are not grants, but one-off assistance for short-term stays in the student's field of investigation, participation in colloquia, document research abroad or training courses with foreign specialists, granted according to the Doctoral School's own financial resources.
Receivability
The call for proposals concerns D1, D2, D3 as a priority (possibly D4 on detailed request).
Missions for doctoral students from the 5th year of registration onwards are granted exclusively if they are intended to enhance the thesis work (colloquia, various presentations, etc.).
Any request less than or equal to 100 euros will not be considered.
Applicants may submit only one application per campaign.
2 campaigns take place during the year:
- in April 2024 for a stay between July and December 2024
- in November 2024 for a stay between January and June 2025

The Flora Blanchon Foundation awards an annual prize to help publish a thesis on the Far East (particularly China and neighboring countries).

Candidates whose applications have been selected by the Foundation's Board of Directors will be notified in the autumn of the current year. CANDIDATE DEADLINE: June 27 at midnight
Since 2011, the Fondation Martine Aublet - Agir pour l'éducation, under the aegis of the Fondation de France, has joined forces with the Research and Teaching Department of the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, to support the younger generation of researchers in non-European fields, through the funding of doctoral and master's-level fellowships.
The disciplines concerned are anthropology, archaeology, ethnolinguistics, ethnomusicology, history, art history and sociology. Research in other disciplines may be accepted, provided that it is carried out in close dialogue with the above-mentioned disciplines. Methods may include ethnographic or ethnolinguistic surveys, archival and documentary research (including collections), or archaeological excavations.
Applicants must be enrolled in a French higher education institution or a French-speaking university abroad. No nationality requirement.
RESEARCH GRANTS (DOCTORATE LEVEL)
The Foundation awards grants of €15,000 designed to finance field research by students enrolled in the first or second year of their thesis.
Funding is available for fieldwork in Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas, lasting at least 6 months between October 1 of the current year and September 30 of the following year.
The application for a research grant must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the thesis supervisor.
The text of the thesis project may be written in English or French. Winners receive their scholarship in two instalments. The second is conditional on the submission to the Foundation of a succinct report (financial and scientific) accompanied by a letter from the thesis director attesting to the satisfactory progress of the research.
A final report will be requested at the end of the year.
The complete application file must be sent no later than June 27 at midnight.

MODALITIES FOR REGISTERING APPLICATIONS
The system for evaluating applications comprises two bodies: a committee of rapporteurs, and then the Scientific Council, which draws up the list of successful candidates.

Students intending to enroll in the first year of their thesis at the start of the 2024-2025 academic year will need to attach to their application file an attestation from their future thesis (or master's) supervisor confirming their enrolment. They must send a certificate of enrolment before September 6, 2024.
The list of winners will be posted on the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac website and distributed at the start of the 2024 academic year (the exact date will be specified at a later date). The scholarship award ceremony will take place on September 30, 2024 in the evening at the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac (attendance expected from scholarship recipients).
